Adoption is the legal transfer of guardianship of a child. While many people have heard of adoption, they are not familiar with the adoption process. Because many women facing unplanned pregnancies do not know what to expect, they tend to dismiss it as an option. At Alpha Center in Fort Collins, we can help take the mystery out of adoption so you can decide if it might be the right choice for you.

How Does Adoption Work?

If you are interested in adoption, you will work with an adoption agency to create an adoption plan. An adoption plan outlines the details of your adoption arrangement. When making your adoption plan, you decide what level of contact you would like to have with the child and the adoptive family.

Open Adoption

Open adoption is an adoption arrangement that allows for various levels of contact between you, the child, and the adoptive family. This contact could consist of regular visitation, phone or video calls, photos, or regular updates from the adoptive family. Depending on your comfort level and the desires of the adoptive family, you can dictate what type and how frequently this communication occurs.

Open adoption is best for those who are not in a position to or are not interested in becoming a parent right now but would still like to be involved in the child’s life.

Semi-Open Adoption

Semi-open adoptions allow for communication through an adoption agent. The adoption agent mediates all communication between you and the adoptive parents, whether that be serving as a middle man or connecting all parties to a conference call to discuss arrangements.

Once the child is born, the adoptive parents will send updates and photos to the adoption agent. The adoption agent will then share those with you. Semi-open adoption allows you to see and get updates on the child while remaining anonymous.

Closed Adoption

Closed adoption is an adoption arrangement that does not allow for any contact between you, the child, and the adoptive family. Your name and contact information will not be shared with the adoptive family. Closed adoption could be the right choice for those who feel as if they need to move on from this chapter of their lives. For some, closed adoption empowers them to move forward.
